Enhancing the Practice of Medicine on a Personal Level

Our Story

HealthyPractice.org was built from lived experience, healthcare proximity, and more than 20 years of people-development work.

Healthcare workers are trained to care for others. But too often, the people doing the caring are quietly carrying more than anyone sees. HealthyPractice.org was created to support the human side of medical and healthcare practice life: the conversations, stress, management challenges, emotional labor, and team dynamics that affect whether people stay, trust each other, and continue serving well.

The Story Behind HealthyPractice.org

The Story Behind HealthyPractice.org

For more than 20 years, Marshall T. Fields, Sr. has worked in learning and development, leadership facilitation, communication strategy, employee engagement, and professional development. His work has focused on helping people communicate with clarity, navigate difficult conversations, build trust, and develop the emotional awareness needed to lead and serve under pressure.

But HealthyPractice.org is not just professional work for Marshall. It is personal.

He was raised by Marsha Fields, a single mother who practiced nursing for 32 years at the Veterans Administration in Lexington, Kentucky. And yes, Marshall was named after his mother. He is also married to Yevette, his wife of 22 years, who has served as a State Registered Nursing Assistant for 28 years. Through their lives and work, Marshall gained a close and personal view of the dedication, emotional labor, and quiet sacrifices carried by healthcare workers every day. Through those stories and experiences, Marshall has seen how often healthcare professionals carry silent battles: the patient interaction they could not shake, the workplace tension they did not feel safe naming, the manager conversation that never happened, the exhaustion hidden behind professionalism, and the emotional weight that follows people home.

HealthyPractice.org exists because those silent pressures eventually show up somewhere. They show up in turnover, conflict, communication breakdowns, disengagement, burnout, low trust, and inconsistent patient experiences. Many practices try to solve these issues with more hiring, more policies, or more operational fixes. Those things may help, but they do not replace the need for healthier communication, stronger managers, clearer expectations, and emotionally supported teams.

What Goes Unseen

The Silent Battles Healthcare Teams Carry

Some of the biggest practice challenges begin as unspoken stress. Click each card to see what can happen when those pressures go unsupported.

The patient interaction they couldn't shake.

Unprocessed patient-facing stress can show up later as withdrawal, irritability, compassion fatigue, emotional exhaustion, or a shorter fuse with coworkers and patients.

The manager conversation that never happened.

Avoided conversations often become unclear expectations, resentment, gossip, repeated mistakes, and preventable turnover.

The front desk pressure no one sees.

The people expected to create calm often absorb confusion, anger, insurance frustration, scheduling pressure, portal issues, and urgency all day.

The team tension that never gets named.

Unspoken tension can become side conversations, mistrust, blame, silence, and a practice culture where people stop raising concerns directly.

The exhaustion hidden behind professionalism.

Healthcare workers often keep functioning while carrying stress privately. Without support, that hidden strain can become disengagement, burnout, or leaving the practice entirely.

Purpose

Why This Work Matters

Family medicine and healthcare practices are emotionally demanding environments. Front office teams absorb patient frustration. Clinical support staff manage urgency, fear, and constant task-switching. Managers are expected to coach, correct, motivate, and retain people — often without formal people-leadership training. Providers are under pressure to care well while navigating stress, time constraints, and team dynamics.

Technology, EHR systems, AI, and clinical tools can support care — and they have an important role. But they should never replace the personal contact, communication, empathy, and trust that patients need to feel truly cared for. HealthyPractice.org exists to strengthen the human side of medicine — the part that no system can automate.

When people do not have the tools to communicate through pressure, the pressure does not disappear. It becomes tone. It becomes avoidance. It becomes gossip, withdrawal, resentment, turnover, and distrust.

HealthyPractice.org helps teams name what is happening before it becomes culture.

Framework

The Emotional Compass in Practice

A practical framework for noticing what emotion is doing before it shapes communication, trust, and behavior.

The Emotional Compass helps healthcare teams recognize how emotion influences communication, perception, trust, and decision-making — and gives them a shared language for navigating those moments with clarity and dignity.

What emotion, pressure, or assumption has entered the room?

Teams learn to recognize when stress, fear, frustration, fatigue, defensiveness, or bias is influencing the interaction.

Background

Practical Tools Behind the Mission

HealthyPractice.org is grounded in more than a single workshop or message. It reflects Marshall T. Fields, Sr.'s broader body of work in communication strategy, leadership development, emotional intelligence, trauma-informed coaching, instructional design, blended learning, and people engagement.

For more than 20 years, Marshall has helped professionals build the skills that make difficult work more sustainable: clearer communication, stronger self-awareness, healthier conversations, better leadership presence, and greater responsibility for how people speak, listen, respond, and repair trust. With certifications in instructional design, blended learning, and trauma-informed coaching, Marshall brings both the learning architecture and the human-awareness lens needed to create training that is practical, emotionally intelligent, and built for real workplace behavior change.

His healthcare and public-health related work includes workshops for UK Population Health Service and CHFS H.A.N.D.S. — Health Access Nurturing Development Services. These experiences helped shape the HealthyPractice.org mission: supporting the people who support others, especially in roles where emotional labor, patient-facing stress, family needs, and team pressure can quietly accumulate.

HealthyPractice.org brings those tools into medical and healthcare practice environments so teams can communicate more clearly, manage pressure more intentionally, and build cultures where people feel supported enough to stay and serve well.

Our Belief

Our Belief

Healthy practices are not built by systems alone. They are built by people who know how to communicate, repair trust, manage stress, lead with clarity, and support one another through the real pressures of the work.

Technology, EHR systems, AI, and clinical tools can support care — and they have an important role. But they should never replace the personal contact, communication, empathy, and trust that patients need to feel truly cared for. Enhancing the practice of medicine on a personal level is what HealthyPractice.org is built to do.

A healthier practice culture does not happen by accident. It is developed through daily habits, better conversations, stronger managers, and a shared commitment to the people behind the care.

HealthyPractice.org exists to help healthcare teams build those habits.
